Tax File Numbers

Have a staff member who has given their TFN, however MYOB is saying it is invalid.  Currently using AR2019.2.

Any help would be great, can't pay their super without a valid number.

  • Hi CarenH-J

Tax file numbers are based on a check digit algorithm. I've found this external website The Australian Tax File Number helpful with explaining how that algorithm works and to check if it's valid. If it's not a valid tax file number, then I would recommend going back to the employee so they can provide you with that valid number. If it is a valid tax number and AccountRight is indicating that it is invalid we would love to investigate further for you.

Do let us know how you get on and if you require further assistance.

  • Hi CarenH-J

MYOB uses a formula provided by the ATO to check validity of a TFN, so it's really the ATO not MYOB telling you it is in fact invalid.

For STP only valid TFN's are accepted - payment summaries accepted invalid ones. So all STP software must check the TFN before submitting. ATO advises if employee has provided invalid TFN use 000 000 000. Get employee to check some ATO documentation such as Notice of Assessment - the error might be simply 2 numbers inadvertently switched when providing their TFN Declaration.

    Regards

    Gavin
